Scaling Lean Across an Entire Project Portfolio:
How Skanska Finland Standardized Lean Production Management

Referenten: Jan Elfving & Henry Salo
Vortragsbeschreibung:
Many contractors have successfully implemented Lean practices on individual projects, yet struggle to create consistency across a diverse project portfolio.

This presentation shows how Skanska Finland moved from isolated scheduling practices and Excel-based takt experiments into a single, unified production management system used across all project types — residential, commercial, healthcare, and infrastructure. As Skanska Finland Senior Vice President put it: "The project doesn't need to be very big before it becomes practically impossible to keep an Excel schedule up to date."

The journey began in 2015 and covers how Skanska designed a system that supports takt production where it creates value, without forcing one model onto every site. The case demonstrates how common planning standards, site management practices, and performance visibility were established across the organization.

Participants will gain practical insights into:
- How to move from successful pilots to a standardised lean operating model at scale
- How to give teams flexibility in production methods while maintaining consistency and comparability
- How leadership can use data to see which sites are flowing, which are drifting, and where support is needed
- What "organisational capability" looks like in practice — not just better projects, but a better system

Concrete results:
+ A common production management framework adopted across the entire Skanska Finland project portfolio.
+ The Härmälänranta project cut construction time in half and received an industry Impact Award.
+ Other Skanska country organisations are now piloting the same approach.
